GO WHERE? DO WHAT?

BMW new inline 6 diesel 2 stage charger

BMW just announced that they will put this new diesel engine to use in their smaller vehicles. I am thinking they will probably go to the 1-series, 3-series and X3 series. Power is increased from 286 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque to 306 hp and 442 lb-ft. This is achieved with 4% reduction is fuel consumption and also emission. Just totally amazing. Why can't others achieve this?

How the turbo works?

Electromagnetic engine by Bill Gates

Recently Bill Gates and his investors in Searete LLC register for a patent for an electromagnetic engine. The new patent technology converts mechanical energy of a piston to and from electrical energy during each piston cycle, in addition to piston-free and opposed-piston variations on the concept.

Below is the description from Searete:

A piston schematic from one of the Searete filings:

"Piston 110 is slidably disposed in cylinder 112, which has two end chambers 114 and 116. In the illustrated embodiment, each end includes an intake valve 118 and an exhaust valve 120, which are configured to admit reactants and to expel reaction product, respectively. Piston 110 includes a magnetic element 122, which may be an electromagnet, a permanent magnet, or a magnetically susceptible material such as an iron core. Piston 110 can be driven in either direction by application of a voltage to converter coils 124, 126, and 128, which together form a converter 130. In addition, the converter 130 is configured to convert mechanical energy of piston 110 to electrical energy. This energy may be stored, for example, in a battery, capacitor, or other energy management system (not shown). The illustrated embodiment includes spark plugs 132, but other ignition sources may be used such as those described elsewhere herein, or the engine may be operated without an ignition source using reactants that spontaneously react in end chambers 114 and 116."

Here is the patent.

Bugatti Veyron W16

Placement of the W16

Bugatti Veyron is one of the most exotic car ever made. It is powered by 8.0L W16 engine supplied by Volkswagen. Volkswagen had a W12 engine which is based on the VR6 engine which was used in Golf and Passat vehicles. The 8.0L W16 engine has 4 turbo chargers. Each turbo feeds air into 4 of the 16 cylinders. Each cylinder is mated with 4 valves. The engine weights 882 lbs (400 kg). It is rated at 1000 hp at 6000 rpm, with 920 lb-ft torque at 2200-5500 rpm.

W16 8.0L engine with quad turbochargers
1000 hp @ 6,300 rpm
920 lb-ft @ 2,200-5,500 rpm
Redline: 6,500 rpm
9.00:1 compression ratio
0-60 in 2.46 sec
2 MPG full throttle, 10 MPG in city, 12 MPG in Highway.
26 Gallons gas tank capacity. Full throttle finish gas tank in 12 minutes.

NSX is no more! Honda concentrate on high MPG rather than MPH.

There is no engine news to announce but read this at autospies.com..via I am a avid fan and dreamed of owning a NSX one day. I was hoping Honda will developed a worthy successor in this next couple of years to replace the Honda NSX. I think today my dream ends with Honda's CEO announcing that Honda will concentrate on the green initiative and develop hybrid and eco-technology. In other words....high MPG rather than high MPH. I am a bit disappointed and also a bit sad. NSX is one of Honda's heritage. If the NSX is gone, will the LF-A from Lexus or the Toyota Supra projects in the can??? We will see. Keep you posted. Thank you Nissan for GT-R.

Kingtiger.

BMW will not continue to develop high Rev engine

Seems like the N54 has proven to BMW that it is a viable platform for developing high hp and torque without going to higher number of cylinders and higher revolutions. Turbocharging also decreases the emission and supply a higher MPG. Their next turbocharge engine will be for the new X6 4.4 liter 90 degree V8. According to Autoweek, this new 4.4 liter will generate the power of the M5 5.0 liter V10 with 500+ hp and 500+ lb-ft.

BMW N54 inline 6 twin turbo

Previous post we have featured the 2JZ inline-6 engine of Toyota. Today we will talk about the innovative BMW heritage inline-6 N54 engine. This is the first turbo engine offered in the US market for a long time. The old M52/M54 in the E46 platform were already a great engine but for the new E90 platform they needed a greater engine.

The E90 debuted the 3 series in the US with the 325i and 330i. Both have the same engine size but with different HP and torque. Differences between these 2 are the intake system, exhaust and the ECU/software. The competitions are offering better and more powerful engines, especially from Infiniti's G35 which has the VQ 3.5 liter V6 engine.

BMW debuted the N54 in late 2006. It is a giant step up. This engine is made from aluminum block and iron lined cylinders. It is also twin turbo with the help from Mitsubishi Industries..hint hint...Lancer Evolution??? BMW chose 2 smaller turbos rather than 1 big turbo. Turbo usually associated with turbo lag. Turbo lag is the time the turbo takes to spin up to speed, to generate enough pressure into the cylinder chamber for combustion. With 2 smaller turbos, running in sequential, the turbo lag is almost eliminated.

N54 won the international engine of the year for 2007 and 2008. Enuff said for a great car and also a great engine.

Toyota 2JZ Inline 6 series engine

The Toyota 2JZ engine series is the one of three inline 6 that I admire a lot. Others are the BMW I6 and the Skyline RB series. Most of these engines are replaced by their more efficient V6 but the BMW I6 is still relevant and has moved to higher fuel efficiency and also horse power.

I owned a 2JZ-GE engine before. It comes in the form of a GS300. It has 220 Hp and 220 ft-lb. It is very well balance, quiet and has tremendous power although the numbers does not show it. Other Toyota/Lexus vehicles that shares this engine are the Toyota Altezza/Lexus IS300, Toyota Soarer/Lexus SC300 and many others.

The 2JZ-GTE is also the powerplant for one of my favorite car. It is the Toyota Supra Turbo. It is a more powerful version and comes with a Twin Turbo configuration. This engine pushes the car to 320 Hp and 315 ft-lb.
